Nature park Barnim offers many opportunities to everyone who wants to discover the beautiful and exciting wildlife in our region. Hikers will find a well signposted net of paths through the park which will lead them to all the places of cultural and natural interest. Most of these paths may, of course, also be used for bicycle tours or horse-riding. A much more comfortable alternative is to take the historic "heather train" (Heidekrautbahn). In the lakeland district around Wandlitz, sun-seekers will find beautiful places to sunbathe and all those who want to keep themselves physically fit are offered a number of water sport activities. But not only in summer or when the sun shines is the nature park worthy of being discovered. A rainy or cold day may be turned into an unforgettable experience by visiting some of the museums or nature schools.
The ice age route gives everyone the opportunity to discover the signs of the last glacial epoch. Very interesting challenges are the long-distance hike "Naturpark-Äquator" organized by the sports association of Berlin (Berliner Sportbund) and the bicycle tours with the ADFC (German bicycle association) and the Friends of the Nature Park.
In addition, the nature guard offers guided tours to many still unknown places and pearls of the park. True to the motto "Adventure Barnim" the nature guard organizes the annual project for school classes. One of the highlights of the year is the nature park celebration in August.

Further sights in the nature park and our region
The nature park does not only have its natural highlights but also a great variety of places of cultural interest - several old stone churches in the villages of our region as well as the medieval city wall of Bernau, the Finow canal or the castle in Oranienburg. In the 17th century, the old hunting lodge was converted into this sumptuous castle for a princess of Nassau-Oranien - the wife of the Great Elector. Hence the modern name of the adjacent town: "Oranienburg". The old name "Bötzow" was transferred to a village south-east of Oranienburg.
Different settlement schemes can be found in the villages in the nature park, e.g. linear villages, villages built around a village green, dispersed homesteads and many more. Many villages hold festivities at least once a year.
The city of Bernau organizes the Hussite Festival in memory of the history of the town that is known for its brewing tradition. Today, the beer is no longer produced independently, many high-quality regional products, however, can be found in the shops of our region or they are marketed directly by ecologically-minded farmers or by craftsmen.
