Barnim A Nature Reserve of Land Brandenburg and Land Berlin
About the Nature Guard
After a long preparation period, Nature park Barnim was officially opened in
1999. Nature park Barnim is the only cross-boarder nature reserve of the Land
Brandenburg and the Land Berlin.
The most important stage in the creation of the nature park started in 1997 when
six employees of the nature guard of the biosphere reserve Schorfheide-Chorin joined the team of the
"Nature park" to support the preparation process. With the
five new workplaces in the administration all requirements for a nature park, e.g.
writing comments, contractual nature conservancy and public relations, could be fulfilled.
The nature guard serves as a kind of intermediary between man and nature in order
to increase everyone's acceptance of the nature reserve. The rangers of the nature
guard explain, help and - thanks to their long experience - can detect dangerous
situations and places in the park.
Due to their expertise and commitment to the
nature park the rangers steadily develop new concepts and ideas in order to bring the
visitors close to the magnificent flora and fauna of the park. One of these projects is a
well documented series of hiking tours, called "Mit der Naturwacht unterwegs" (On tour with
the nature guard). In addition to the proficient guidance, a leaflet has been designed for each
tour with detailed information about the wildlife and culture connected with the
area the hikers cross. Did you know which bat species in Germany are real little
vampires, or which toad call sounds like a bell?
The nature guard will tell you many more of the secrets of the wildlife in our region and looks forward to welcoming you in the Nature park Barnim.
School classes and groups of children and adolescents have the opportunity to take
part in the project series "Adventure Barnim". Every year, a new habitat is in the
focus of this project. The groups discover the beauty and the particularities of the
habitat and may even win a prize with their results. These projects are intended to
bring children and teenagers close to nature with all its facets, because only those
who know nature will help to protect it.

Where to find the nature guard
The nature guard and the administration of the nature park have their headquarters
in the old mayoral building "Altes Lehnschulzenhaus" in Wandlitz. Additionally, two employees in each of its three districts guarantee a thorough care of the nature
park.
